Tampax - Social Media Ad

Simon Sutton

GOAL

This is one of my first assignments during my time at the Centre for Arts and Technology, and it's one I'm quite proud of. The goal behind the assignment was to exhibit our illustrator skills by recreating a product and forming an ad campaign around it.

CHALLENGES

As per usual, my biggest issue with this assignment was selecting a brand to go with, but eventually I got inspired when brainstorming with one of my peers. Our instructor had suggested that we look into brands that we are loyal to, and jokingly I suggested that I could do Tampax Tampons. The tagline soon followed the joke, and after some consideration I decided that there was no reason I couldn't.

PLAN

Once I knew what brand I wanted to work with, I got started on finding the perfect reference photo. I then got to work on recreating the tampon box; making all three viewable sides as flat images and altering them to form the shape of a box. It took quite a bit of trial and error to deconstruct the product design, but once I focused on recreating each section, layer by layer, I was happy to see it come together slowly. If you take a closer look at the product itself, Tampax tends to use an array of gradients in their designs; giving off a glowing and shiny look to their products. This is something I carry to the campaign background, using gradients and line work to draw the viewers eye towards the product.

LEARNED

This assignment also gave me quite a bit of insight on what it takes to design some of societies most popular products. The amount of detail in something as simple as this tampon box shocked me, and gave me a sneak peak at one of the many things that make a great designer. Something that I hope to remember in all my projects to come.
