Aphrodite Information Poster

Simon Sutton

GOAL

One of my biggest struggles throughout my time at CATO was the ever present shadow that we all know as art-block. I often found myself left face-to-face with this overbearing guest every time I had a break between semesters, and the only thing that seemed to scare it off was the promise of a personal project.

PLAN

Knowing I needed something inspiring to do with my time, I quickly decided to create an information poster based around the goddess of love, Aphrodite. Greek Mythology has always been an interest of mine, and what would be a better way to ignite my inner artist than to revisit my childhood day dreams. With the old tales in mind, I already knew that I wanted to keep things clean and classy, in hopes to embrace the graceful nature of this beautiful goddess. I then did what I always do, and dove right into further research.

After collecting some reference images of Aphrodite's signature symbols, I got to work on creating line-art vectors that I could form into an image accent for the main illustration. With the beach in mind, I then created a tall, curvy figure with flowing blonde hair and a pale green dress to match the Greek, sun-kissed skin tone.

CHALLENGE

It took some time for me to decide between adding facial features or not, but eventually I decided against it in order to trigger the viewers imagination. This, united with the white space surrounding the poster information (provided by Colette Baron-Reid and goddessgift.com) allows for an airy and fresh design.

LEARNED

Since this was a personal project of something I was already quite knowledgeable in, I didn't really learn anything new throughout my design process; however, I do hope that anyone that sees this poster can learn a few new things about our Lady Aphrodite. I do realize that her stories often come filled with an overwhelming sense of jealousy and revenge, but there is so much more to this individual. To me, her disposition is as soft and gentle as the breeze, with the strength and power of the ocean waves. She is a guide as much as she is a force to reckon with, for she is the mother of love.
