Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue - Art Nouveau

Simon Sutton

GOAL

For this particular assignment we were challenged to create a perfume advertisement using one of three specific art eras, and I happily chose to do the Art Nouveau movement with no second thought.

LEARNED

After some research I quickly came to realize that Art Nouveau advertisements are most known for their golden backdrops, use of thick line art, and geometric shapes. They can also be spotted by their muted earth tones, European influences, flat background layers, and highly emphasized focal points; something that is most commonly represented by a beautiful, young women with an airy dress, free-flowing hair, and expressive hand movements.

CHALLENGE

By selecting an "old paper" texture, I managed to mimic the common golden backdrop, giving

myself a solid base for my over-all design. I then searched high and low for a high-quality reference photo of a woman with the same visual aesthetic of those in old Art Nouveau posters. It ended up being a struggle for me to find one, but eventually I settled on something that got the job done. The position of the model's hand ended up being perfect for holding a bottle up perfume, so I then focused my attention on finding something that could relate well to the art style.

PLAN

After looking up the most popular perfumes based in Europe, I found Dolce and Gabbana's light blue,

which was made up of multiple scents that I could use to my advantage. After selecting some

more reference photos, I incorporated the "ingredients" into a circular background layout and

muted their original colors for that "earthy" art nouveau feel; mixing in the thick lines and

geometric shapes as I mentioned beforehand. This layout then left the perfect place for a flat

background, which I based off of a beach trail in Europe. The final touches went from there,

adding in more muted colors, lines, and photoshop adjustments that tied everything together in

a pretty bow.
